Fun Was Had By All

This year's event attracted another huge crowd of spectators. Each year, the spectators seem to double in size. At this time, the final estimates are not in, but this year's turn out should be close to a record.

No one could have called up a more beautiful day in San Diego. The temperature hovered in the mid 70's with clear skies. For over an hour and a half, a constant procession of floats, bands and clowns entertained the crowd. It was a great day for parents and kids to share time together.

For 34 years, the Holiday Bowl Parade has kicked off the festivities for the Bridgepoint Holiday Bowl football game. This year the parade is dubbed, "Holiday Bowl, Big Bay Balloon Parade." This line up definitely didn't have a shortage of balloons. Some were humongous, others were comical and other took some curious flights. Near the ferry landing, a golden eagle nearly took out a portion of the crowd. It was a good thing it was made out of plastic and hot air.

The two opposing teams, the bands for the Uni. of California Badgers and the Uni. of Texas Longhorns represented their schools in the parade. With fancy steps and contemporary tunes, they gave the crowd a thrill. The high school bands performed well too.

It was also a time for kids with special needs to shine too. Also, a number of youth groups were represented. There were some comical groups like the procession of wiener dogs (dachshunds) and seniors driving down Harbor Drive in miniature vintage cars.

The activities started with the 2011 Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals. It was followed by the Bumble Bee foods 5k run. The parade capped off the pre-game festivities.
